The biggest news of the week has to be the election of a new American President. This series of 80 or so photographs are excellent for their simplicity and truth. I felt like I was looking at somebody’s family album. Watch them here and here’s John Naughton’s eloquent take on them from his blog MemexContinue reading “News of The Week”

Holiday
I’m away for a week, and while there may be the occasional post from Cork, normal service will resume on November 3rd. I know that it’s school half-term in a lot of the country so if you get a chance to rest do take it, you’ll need your energy for the months ahead.
So that’s OK then….or is it really excellent?
An excellent post from Mike Denham at the Burning our Money blog The boxes are ticked, the targets are hit, so all is well. GPs are incentivised to keep sick people away from hospitals, Junior hospital doctors are short of experience. Elderly patients are suffering from malnutrition or hospital acquired infections because there’s no oneContinue reading “So that’s OK then….or is it really excellent?”
An alternative to wall-to-wall doom and gloom.
I have to admit to being an avid radio listener but over the past few weeks I have become jaded with wall to wall and ear to ear bad news. Jeremy Vine is my particular hate, there doesn’t seem to be anything that he can’t appear to make sound worse than it is. Chicken LickenContinue reading “An alternative to wall-to-wall doom and gloom.”
“You’ve had a bloody lucky escape mate…”
I missed posting “the weekend read” & Monday Morning Quote” over the past few days. This was due to a rapid visit to West Cork for the memorial service for my friend Geoffrey Bannister who passed away, or “promoted” as Johnnie Walker puts it, earlier this year. It seemed a good chance to move oneContinue reading ““You’ve had a bloody lucky escape mate…””
Time for a change?
From the excellent John Naughton’s blog, as a fellow proud Irish citizen these are my sentiments entirely.
The Monday Morning Quote #10
On Thursday evening I listened to my friend Brian Mormon talking about the trip he made along Route 66 with his brother last year. They were riding hired Harley Davidson ‘Fatboys’ and obviously had a great road trip. They raised £17,000 for The National Star Centre which is a charity based in Gloucestershire. Route 66Continue reading “The Monday Morning Quote #10”
The Weekend Read: 8. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
I have just returned from running the Cirencester Park 10K. This is the first ‘serious’ part of the build up to the next London Marathon and I thought I would feature a book that I have just bought but haven’t opened so this will be my weekend read. Haruki Murakami is a highly rated novelistContinue reading “The Weekend Read: 8. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running”
The Weekend Read: 7 The Road Less Travelled
I read this week’s book several years ago, but for some reason it didn’t make as much of an impact on me as it did second time round. Thanks to Jo Daly from Springs Dental Practice in Darlington for reminding me about it. Any book that starts: ‘Life is difficult. This is a great truth, oneContinue reading “The Weekend Read: 7 The Road Less Travelled”
Dance like there’s no one watching
From youtube this is clever and if you’re anywhere near my vintage you’ll find it impossible to keep still. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jAT0o2dY6M
